The History of Our Movement

A Legacy of Sacrifice, Solidarity, and Renewal

The National Citizen Party (NCP) - Sylhet District is rooted in the popular mobilization of the July 2024 Mass Uprising (জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থান). Emerging from the student and citizen resistance that toppled authoritarian rule, the Jatiya Nagorik Committee established grassroots organizing cells to restructure the country from the bottom up.

In Sylhet—a region defined by its deep spiritual history, the legacy of anti-colonial resistance, and its vast global diaspora—the district chapter was established to translate street mobilization into long-term political representation. Today, the Sylhet District unit has built full convening frameworks across all 13 upazilas, expanding into municipalities and union parishads to organize the people for democratic governance and the realization of the Second Republic.

“National Citizen Party (NCP) - Sylhet District proudly expresses its commitment to working in close coordination with NCP Central and the citizens of Sylhet for a stronger, more united, and democratic future.”

Our Journey

Key Historic Phases

1
July – August 2024 Phase I

The Catalyst - The July Uprising (2024)

In July 2024, what began as a targeted, peaceful student protest against a highly discriminatory civil service quota system rapidly ignited into a profound, historic national uprising. A decade-and-a-half-long fascist regime, which had systematically eroded institutional independence, suppressed democratic dissent, and compromised basic human rights, responded with unprecedented force.

Despite systemic internet blackouts, curfews, and aggressive state crackdowns, the student-citizen collective refused to back down. Driven by the immortal memory of pioneering martyrs like Abu Sayed and Wasim Akram, millions of everyday citizens flooded the streets. On August 5, 2024, the absolute rule of the autocracy collapsed, opening a clean slate for the future of Bangladesh.

The Public Mandate: The fall of the regime was not merely a call to change the faces occupying government seats. It was an explicit, uncompromised mandate from the public to completely uproot the foundational structures of fascism and rebuild the state on an absolute guarantee of citizen rights.

September 2024 Phase II

Restructuring Civil Society - The Jatiya Nagorik Committee

In the immediate aftermath of the uprising, key coordinators recognized that street victories must be translated into long-term political stability to prevent the return of older, corrupt political habits.

  • September 2024: The Jatiya Nagorik Committee was officially established. Led by figures like Akhter Hossen and Nasiruddin Patwary, its mission was to engage civil society deeply, support families of the martyrs, and systematically challenge institutional corruption.
  • Grassroots Mobilization: The committee tirelessly worked to form local oversight units across every upazila and police precinct in Bangladesh. This massive network ensured that public opinions on constitutional reform, accountability, and political representation were gathered directly from the ground up.

February 2025 Phase III

The Historical Launch of the NCP (February 2025)

Following months of comprehensive national surveys, policy dialogues, and intensive structural planning, the definitive step was taken to provide the public with a viable alternative to the traditional political binary.

On February 28, 2025, at a historic launch ceremony held at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka, the National Citizen Party (NCP) was officially proclaimed to the world. Attended by diplomats, civil rights pioneers, student organizers, and - most importantly - the families of those injured and martyred in the uprising, the event marked the birth of the first student-initiated political party in the history of the nation.

Under the leadership of Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, the party presented its formal manifesto to champion reformism, pluralism, and a moderate, centrist trajectory.

2025 – 2026 Phase IV

Building Grassroots Power - Sylhet District Chapter

The struggle for a transparent, self-reliant, and just state is not confined to the capital. Sylhet, defined by its deep spiritual history, the legacy of anti-colonial resistance, and its vast global diaspora, plays a vital role in national transformation.

Today, the Sylhet District unit has built full convening frameworks across all 13 upazilas, expanding into municipalities and union parishads to organize the people for democratic governance and the realization of the Second Republic.
